Should You Allow Your Child to Chew on Specific Items When Teething?

Should You Allow Your Child to Chew on Specific Items When Teething?Sometime in your child's first year, you may begin to notice that your child is teething. Symptoms include increased saliva flow, drooling, biting and chewing during feedings, excessive chewing on the hands and fingers and sometimes, even a low-grade fever.

We receive a lot of phone calls from parents of teething tots asking us for some safe ways to handle the pain and discomfort of teething.

Avoiding Medications
Aside from an infant specific pain reliever such as Motrin or Tylenol, we recommend that you stay away from oral products that contain benzocaine. Recently, the FDA has declared that these over the counter products can pose a serious risk for children and infants and should not be used. So if you choose not to use over the counter medications and oral gels, what can a parent do to soothe a teething child?

Fortunately, there are lots of other safe ways to treat teething. A damp wash cloth that has been chilled or briefly frozen (not solid) is an excellent teething soother. If your child has already started eating solid foods, a chilled yogurt, or a frozen fruit puree can be soothing.

If you choose to use a teething ring, be sure that you select one that is non-toxic and not filled with anything liquid. These pose a risk to your child if they are punctured and can also be a potential choking hazard. The same applies to teething rings with small pieces. Avoid these as they can be a choking hazard to your child. When you do choose a teething ring, do not freeze it. This makes them too firm and this can bruise or damage the gums.

Teething can be a trying time, and our staff is here for you, should you have any questions or concerns about your baby and the teething process. Give us a call today, we look forward to hearing from you.
My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
