Being Strong for Your Kids When You Fear the Dentist

Posted on 6/15/2017 by Fariba Mutschler
A woman afraid of the dentist covering her mouth.
A lot of times when a parent is afraid of the dentist, they inadvertently pass that fear off to their children. They do not bring their child to the dentist as often as they should because they themselves worry about being in the dentist's chair.

If you are nervous about going to the dentist, go out of your way to try and remain strong and diligent about taking your kids to the dentist. They need to go, and it is up to you to get them there.

Remember, Their Dentist Can Help

If you cannot say anything that is helpful to your child, in terms of keeping them excited about going to see the dentist, then tell them that their dentist will speak with them about what is going on and leave it at that.

Many well-meaning parents try and make something positive out of their fears, and the words come out a bit jumbled.

This can make the child nervous without any attempt to do so. Privately tell your child's dentist that you are nervous and why, then let the dentist take over from there. They can reassure your child, and even explain to your child all of the benefits that come with regular dental checkups.

Bring Your Child to The Dental Office.

Keeping your child going to the dentist regularly is important. Not only does it help prevent cavities and tooth decay, but it also improves your child's overall health.

If you want to be able to let your child draw their own conclusions about going to the dentist, then make sure you get them to the dentist every six months. Even if you must stay quiet about the topic, your child can still have a great relationship with their dentist.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about your child's oral health.
