How to Make Flossing with Kids Into a Fun Habit

Posted on 8/30/2016 by Fariba Mutschler
A young girl flossing her teeth.Getting your kids to brush their teeth can be a bit of a chore. Getting them to floss can be just as difficult, if not more so. It doesn't have to be this way.

You can turn flossing into a fun habit that your kids will look forward to.

Why is Flossing Important?

Brushing your teeth removes plaque, germs and leftover food from teeth. All of these contaminants can get stuck in between teeth as well, and brushing can't reach them, leaving them to build up. Bacteria thrive off of these things, causing tooth decay and gum disease. Children are just as vulnerable as adults. Flossing gets out what's stuck, keeping teeth healthy.

Buy Kid Friendly Floss Sticks

These flossing sticks are designed specifically for kids. They are smaller, to accommodate a smaller mouth and come in a variety of fun colors. Some even feature your child's favorite television characters. If your child can pick out something they like, they are more likely to use it.

Make a Chart
Create a brushing and flossing chart. Every time your child completes the task, give your child a fun sticker to place on it. You can even offer them rewards for accumulating a certain amount of stickers. Instead of a monetary reward, however, offer them something else. For instance, let them pick a movie to watch or give them an extra chapter of the book you are reading together at bedtime.

Sing Songs
Kids love fun songs. Create a unique song all about flossing and sing it together every time they floss. It will give them something to look forward to.

Do it Together
Children imitate their parents. Your kids most likely want to feel grown up, and they love spending time with you. Floss with them. If they see you doing it, they are more likely to want to do it as well.

Flossing is just as important as brushing. Your kids may at first be opposed to it, but if you make it fun, they'll always look forward to it. Please contact us if you have any questions about helping your children floss.
