Four Creative Ways to Improve Your Child's Oral Health

Posted on 5/27/2016 by Fariba Mutschler
A young boy flossing his teeth. Is it a struggle for you to get your kids to brush their teeth or visit the dentist? Are you searching for ways to help improve your child's oral health in a fun and creative way?

Try using some of these tips the next time that you have a difficult time convincing your child to take care of his teeth.

Have Your Child Brush with the Bathroom Door Open

It is important that you watch your child brush his teeth for several years to make sure that he is using a proper technique. You can also keep your bathroom door open so that he can watch you brush and floss, as when you lead by example you can teach him positive habits.

Read a Book Together
Choosing a book about oral hygiene and the importance of brushing can be a good way to help your child to understand the importance of dental health and caring for his teeth. This is a great way to learn while also spending some quality time together.

Use the Gross Out Factor to Your Advantage
Talking about decayed or rotten teeth is certainly important, but what might be more effective is to actually show your child a picture of a rotten tooth. These images can open up a discussion about what will happen if he isn't able to keep his teeth clean. Not all children will respond well to this technique, so use your own discretion to determine if this is a good way to approach the situation with your kids.

Provide Incentives
Each time that your child gets a dental checkup, provide him with some type of positive reward. This could be playing a game together or a trip to the park. It doesn't have to be big, but it does have to show your child that he gets to do something fun because he went to the dentist. This will help him to establish positive feelings about dental checkups.
